Established in 1989, CSI College began its journey by offering Montessori education in accordance with the standards of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), delivered by highly qualified AMI-trained teachers. As our students progressed through Montessori education and preschool, the College expanded its academic offerings year by year, introducing Grade 1 and subsequently higher grades, ultimately growing into one of Sri Lanka’s leading international schools, 6th to be registered.

The establishment of CSI College was inspired by a clear educational vision and a strong commitment to preserving the high standards of English education in Sri Lanka. Following the Government’s decision in 1956 to replace English with Sinhala and Tamil as the medium of instruction in government schools, the overall standard of English proficiency among students and the workforce gradually declined as a result of this decision. Although English remained a compulsory subject, the shortage of qualified English-medium teachers made it increasingly difficult to provide students with the communication skills essential for success in a global environment.
Having personally experienced the benefits of an English-medium education, I the Founder recognized the long-term impact this change would have on future generations. This vision led to the establishment of CSI College with the objective of providing quality English-medium education and restoring the high standards of English established in Sri Lankan prior to 1956.
Our guiding mission has remained unchanged since our inception:
” Provision of a disciplined, cultured, younger generation, with respect for human values to face the challenges of the 21st century and beyond “
Today, with over 37 years of excellence in education, CSI College has earned a reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s respected educational institutions. We have educated and inspired more than 20,000 students, many of whom have progressed to prestigious universities around the world, while others have built successful careers in the public and private sectors. Our graduates continue to make meaningful contributions to society as skilled, responsible, and confident professionals.
One of CSI College’s greatest strengths is its Board of Management, comprising distinguished professionals from diverse fields from the same family, including medicine, Chartered Management Accountancy, Chartered Public Accountancy, and the legal profession. Their expertise provides strong governance, strategic direction, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of education.
Our success is further enhanced by a team of dedicated and experienced educators and staff who are passionate about nurturing every student’s potential. I completed the internationally recognized AMI Diploma conducted at St. Bridget’s Convent and belong to the 1988 batch of AMI-trained teachers, holding International Registration No. 2020723. This prestigious qualification has provided me with a strong foundation in the educational philosophy and scientific methods developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.
My professional journey extended beyond Sri Lanka when I moved to the United States with my family. During my time in Las Vegas, Nevada, I established and managed three Montessori schools:
- Sunrise Montessori House of Children
- Happy Days Montessori House of Children
- Sunrise Montessori Academy
Teaching children from diverse cultural and national backgrounds enriched my understanding of early childhood education and enabled me to introduce innovative teaching methods, specialized Montessori materials, and internationally recognized best practices. These experiences have greatly influenced the educational standards and learning environment we continue to uphold at Colombo South International College.
Dr. Maria Montessori emphasized that the period between 2½ and 6 years of age is the most significant stage of human development. During these formative years, children possess what she described as the “Absorbent Mind”—an extraordinary ability to absorb knowledge, language, values, and life skills naturally from their surroundings. This unique developmental window makes it essential to provide children with a carefully prepared Montessori environment where learning occurs through purposeful exploration, independence, and hands-on experiences.
A true Montessori education extends far beyond childcare. It is a scientifically designed educational approach that nurtures the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development of every child. Through authentic Montessori materials and carefully planned activities, children develop:
- Strong mathematical concepts through Montessori mathematical materials.
- Early literacy and phonetic language skills using scientifically designed language materials.
- Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Independence and confidence through Practical Life activities.
- Concentration, discipline, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
- Social responsibility, respect for others, and a lifelong love for learning.
Understanding child psychology and recognizing the uniqueness of every child remain central to our educational philosophy. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn at their own pace while developing confidence, independence, and a positive attitude towards learning.
Over the years, we have expanded our Montessori Division by establishing branches in Kalubowila, Kottawa, and Panadura, enabling more families to benefit from authentic Montessori education. Many children who began their educational journey in our Montessori classrooms have successfully progressed to Grade 1 at Colombo South International College and have continued to excel throughout their academic careers.
Today, as we celebrate 37 years of excellence in education, we are proud that our students have grown into accomplished professionals and responsible global citizens who continue to make valuable contributions to society. Their achievements stand as a testament to the strong educational foundation laid during their formative years.
